Wizards of the Coast announced on 5 October that Magic boosters change starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first set of 2027, out on 5 February. There are four changes, and none of them raises the price.
Play Boosters become Booster Packs
It is only the name: same pack, good for drafting and for opening just for fun.
No more foil commons and uncommons
Booster Packs stop including foil commons and uncommons, and no longer guarantee a foil card per pack. If you open a foil, it will be a rare or mythic, and Wizards is raising the odds of those, without giving numbers.
Collector Boosters lose two foil commons and one foil uncommon, and they are not replaced: each Collector Booster has three fewer cards. Some foil commons and uncommons remain; how many is not stated.
Wizards’ reasoning: those are the cards people get least excited about when opening a pack, and cutting them frees printing capacity for what comes next.
Japan Showcase in regular packs
Foil Japan Showcase cards, so far only in Collector Boosters, can now appear in the wildcard slot of Booster Packs.
God Packs arrive
The big one: packs where nearly everything is rare or mythic. They will be in every in-house Magic set from Nauctis on; Universes Beyond sets (crossovers like Star Trek or Marvel) are expected to follow in 2028.
| Booster Pack | Collector Booster | |
|---|---|---|
| Odds | 1 in 1,000 packs | 1 in 300 packs |
| Celebration card | 1 | 1 |
| Regular rares or mythics | 10 | 3 foil |
| Alternate-art rares or mythics | 2 non-foil + 2 foil | 3 non-foil + 5 foil |
| Other | — | 1 foil land |
A 36-pack box has roughly a 3.5% chance of holding a God Pack, so it is a rare treat, not something to count on.
What it means for players
Draft barely changes: commons and uncommons are still there, just without the shine. The ones who lose out are players who picked up cheap foils for their Commander deck, who from 2027 will have to find them in Collector Boosters or as singles.
Nauctis is also the set that brings the next Standard rotation, so February will be busy. And if you want to track your games while you open packs, MagicNexus handles life, poison and commander damage for free.
Frequently asked questions
- When do Magic boosters change?
- With Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the first set of 2027, released on 5 February. The remaining 2026 sets, such as Star Trek, keep the current boosters.
- What is a God Pack in Magic?
- A pack where almost every card is a rare or mythic. In Booster Packs it shows up in one of every 1,000 packs and holds 14 rares or mythics, four of them with alternate art and two in foil. In Collector Boosters it is one in every 300 and holds a foil land plus 11 rares or mythics, eight of them foil.
- Are boosters getting more expensive?
- No. Wizards says none of these changes come with a price increase.
