There is no Standard rotation in 2026. Not in the fall, not at any other point in the year. If you have a deck built, it stays legal.
This isn’t an oversight. It’s a calendar change.
What changed
Until now, Standard rotated once a year, after the fall set’s Prerelease. From 2027 on, rotation moves to the first set of the calendar year.
That shift leaves a gap: to fit the new calendar, 2026 gets no rotation at all. The cards that would have rotated this fall stay legal a few months longer and then leave together at the next one.
So when is the next one?
With the first set of 2027. And it isn’t the usual four sets — it’s six, because they carry over the ones spared in 2026:
- Wilds of Eldraine
- The Lost Caverns of Ixalan
- Murders at Karlov Manor
- Outlaws of Thunder Junction
- Bloomburrow
- Duskmourn: House of Horror
From then on, Standard is the sets from 2025, 2026 and 2027, and the pattern repeats: three years of sets, always.
The exception that trips people up
Foundations came out in November 2024, so by date it should leave with the group above. It doesn’t. It’s an evergreen set and stays legal through at least 2029.
If you build a deck leaning on Foundations cards, the 2027 rotation won’t break it.
Careful what you read out there
Plenty of Magic sites — and Wizards’ own format page — still say the “four oldest sets” rotate after the fall Prerelease. That is no longer true: not the when, not the how many.
Want the detail? We keep the full list of which sets are Standard legal today, which rotate and when, with dates.
