Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, Magic's next Marvel set: release date and first cards

Published on 10 October 2026

Wizards and Marvel announced it on 9 October 2026 at New York Comic Con: Magic’s next Marvel set is Marvel: Darkhold Destiny (set code MDD), releasing 9 April 2027. Preorders are already open.

If Marvel Super Heroes (June 2026) was the superhero side, this is the dark, magical side of the Marvel multiverse: the Darkhold, the Dark Dimension, gods, vampires, werewolves, witches and devils.

Every revealed card, with images, is in the set gallery, which fills itself in as Wizards shows more.

What’s new: an original story

It’s the first Universes Beyond set built around an original story, written by Magic’s Narrative team together with Marvel instead of adapting existing comics. It hops between dimensions and centres on the Dark Dimension and Marvel’s pantheon of gods.

It also debuts a brand-new Marvel character, whose origin is told in a comic by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly: digital in February 2027, print in April, alongside the set.

Confirmed characters

From cards and art shown so far: Hela, Magik (Illyana Rasputin), Doctor Strange, Dormammu, Sif, Moon Knight (Khonshu) and Gargantos. The announcement also mentions Blade, Werewolf by Night and Mephisto, plus “vampire-hunting vampires”. Scarlet Witch and Ghost Rider are heavily rumoured but not confirmed.

The seven revealed cards

  • The Darkhold — mythic, {1}{B}{B} legendary artifact (Book). Tap it to add a sin counter and draw a card per counter… then lose 1 life per card in your hand. For {6}{B}{B}, every player’s life becomes the lowest life total at the table.
  • Hela, Mistress of Darkness — mythic 6/6 for {4}{B}{B}. Whenever a player loses life during your turn, make that many 2/2 Zombies (once per turn). Her other half, Dark Tutor, searches for any card, but can only be cast from your graveyard.
  • Hela’s Arcanum — rare Arcane instant for {3}{B}{B}. Spend five {P} across three modes: grant deathtouch, make a creature come back when it dies, or destroy every non-Zombie creature with power 3 or less.
  • Magik, Illyana Rasputin — mythic 3/3 for {1}{B}{R}. Each upkeep, exile your top card and you may play it. Sacrifice two permanents in a turn and she transforms into Darkchild, a 4/4 that exiles until it hits a nonland card.
  • Rise from the Nether — uncommon, {6}{R}. One 3/1 token per noncreature, nonland card in your graveyard.
  • Penance Stare — uncommon, {W}. Destroy target attacking creature with mana value 3 or less. Cheap and clean.
  • Temple of Khonshu — common white/black land that enters tapped unless you control a Dimension.

Mechanics so far

  • Vengeance: a second half of the card you can only cast from your graveyard, then exile (like Hela’s Dark Tutor). Think Adventures in reverse: creature first, spell once it’s dead.
  • Arcane is back: Kamigawa’s spell subtype, here on the “dark magic” instants and sorceries.
  • {P} modes: spells where you split points across several effects, like Hela’s Arcanum.
  • Dimensions: a new kind of permanent that Temple of Khonshu refers to; none shown yet.
  • Scene cards: Wizards called Gargantos, the Endbringer a “scene card”, tied to the new Scene Boxes.

Products

Play and Collector Boosters, four Commander decks, Scene Boxes and new special card treatments. Commander deck names haven’t been announced.

Most likely: it’s a main set (like Marvel Super Heroes, which is legal), and Scryfall already lists an Arena code for it. But Wizards hasn’t confirmed it yet, so it doesn’t count until April. For what’s legal today, see Standard legal sets.

Mind the calendar too: it lands after Nauctis (5 February 2027), which is the set that triggers rotation.

What we still don’t know

  • How many cards the set has.
  • Prerelease date.
  • Who the new character is.
  • The Commander decks and their commanders.

We’ll add cards here as they’re revealed. Meanwhile, if you play with a group, MagicNexus lets you log games, run cups and leagues and keep track of your card trades.
